Colin Bourne   - 21 April 2011

The Club is sad to announce the passing of Colin Bourne at the age of 86 on 21st April 2011 after a long illness.

Colin was believed to be the longest continuous member of the Club joining straight after the war so a member for around 65 years. He played in the first game at Bull Pond Lane in 1950 and attended the 40 year re-union in 1990 and was a regular attendee at Presidents Day. He was club captain in the 1950's and a fine batsman but a brilliant fielder and the Colin Bourne Trophy is awarded annually to the club's best fielder.

Times and attitudes were different in the 1950's - Colin a strict Methodist  would not play on Sundays and Don Cutler recalls being told by Colin to tie his tie up properly when turning up for a first team game -- although despite this reprimand the two men were friends ever since.

Colin was a polite man and a real gentleman  -- in my time as Secretary every time I sent a fixture card or annual report he would always write a thank you note and I know a number of recipients of the Colin Bourne Trophy also received congratulatory notes.

Tony Green    - 24 March 2011

I am sorry to have to inform the Club of the sudden death of Tony Green, who died in hospital this morning after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday.  Cllr Tony Green

As well as being one of the Club's most regular customers, Tony was also very helpful on all matters electrical whether testing, installing more efficient energy saving bulbs, and providing the PA and microphone systems for the quiz nights, Lancot Trophies, and all other big games hosted by the Club. His local contacts also provided useful advice to the Club on bar, police, traffic as well as representing social members on the Executive Committee. He will be sadly missed.

Tony was a Councillor with Central Beds Council and Dunstable Town Council having been Mayor in 2008/09. He was a Governor with Downside Lower School and Priory Middle School, and an appointed member of LuDun Trust, Beds & Luton Fire Authority and Dunstable CAB.

Message from Ted McDougal, Club Chairman:

Brian Edwards " Barney" was one of the club's long standing members having joined the club in the mid 1970's .Even when he joined he was well known to a number at the club having played against us for Wycombe House - the first team at the time would have been pleased - fiercely competitive, you always wanted him on your side. When he joined he had a habit of calling everyone Barney -- it didn't stick, except I suspect to his annoyance,  to him.

For those not old enough to remember, he was an excellent all-rounder, top order batsman and off-spin bowler . He was also a brilliant fielder -- when I joined the club in the earlier 80's I thought it was strange that the Club's best fielder was in his mid 40's. Club President Brian Chapman recalls that the finest catch he has seen at Club level was taken by Barney from the first ball of a match versus Hornsey. He was also a regular and amusing tourist.

In recent years he has been very frequently at the club and it has been amazing that despite his advancing illness he has always been charming , good natured and never complaining which is a real mark of the man. Barney will be sadly missed and our thoughts go to Linda and the family.

13 Dec -Thank you from Linda:

I would like to thank all club members who made Brian's service so memorable by attending at the Priory and afterwards at the Club.  Claire, Tracy and myself knew that he would be so proud to have had such a turnout. Thank you all so much.
Linda
